How to register | Voter registration deadline | ID and other requirements | Absentee and early voting
Not sure what you’re registering for? Here’s an explainer on U.S. elections.
You’ll need to show a photo ID. Examples of what you can bring:
If you don’t have an ID, you’re allowed to go to the polls and request what’s called a “provisional ballot,” which means you promise to show ID at a later date (or else your vote won’t count).
There’s no length-of-residency requirement to vote in Virginia.
You can vote early starting 45 days before the election.
You’ll need to apply for an absentee ballot through your local registrar’s office.
You need to apply for an absentee ballot by the Tuesday before the election. Your mailed ballot needs to be received before the polls close.
Military/overseas voters can also get a ballot through the Federal Voting Assistance Program.
